A little while back I was reading a debate that was a selected choice in our Room for Debate. This debate held a controversial, yet relevant question that I think people need to hear. Is Digital Connectedness Good or Bad for People? Although I felt like this was a question that needed to be explored, it's simply to broad. In my opinion digital connectedness can be both good and bad. There is evidence that goes against and for it.
Emerson Csorba an education policy adviser is under the impression that, "The authenticity of these online activities is often more an attempt to curate a particular image than expression of a person's actual beliefs and convictions." In other words he is trying to say that he thinks that people value other people's opinions more than their own. People try and create a persona of who they want to be online. When they do this they are going against who they really are as a person. I think that people shouldn't get to carried away by this trend.
I personally joined the social media world my first year of middle school. I don't really think that it had a bad affect on me at all. Besides the fact that all middle schoolers went through weird phases that were seen online. I just want to sorry to anyone who has seen any pictures of me in middle school. What I'm trying to say is that people eventually do get swept up in trends, but that is not a bad thing. Along the way people finds things that they are interested in and people who like the same things they like. Yes, I do blame the internet for my 7th grade obsession with pizza but I thank the internet at the same time for introducing me to all my favorite music artists.
Do you think people lose their actual beliefs and convictions by playing into social media? Did social media lead to the connection of the global web?

ReplyDeleteI agree that people should not lose themselves getting carried away with half-hearted beliefs for the sake of appealing to others. In fact, that goes against what social media should really be used for: growing as a person you can proudly claim for yourself.
ReplyDeleteThe Internet provides opportunities for people to share their interests and opinions for everyone to see and even learn from. With platforms such as Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat, we are given chances to grow and change at the same moment as anyone around the globe. The nonstop flow of new information exposes us to different perspectives and encourages the idea of being open-minded as we experience how others view the world.
Thanks to social media, we have bridged the gap of the global web and evolved into an online community that is constantly growing and progressing together. It often goes farther than sharing our favorite underground artist's new songs or catching the perfect angle of your dinner plate. Social media has real influential power in our lives and we should not be afraid to use it for good.

I agree that the internet has both, good and bad qualities, and people do tend to paint a picture of what they want there life to be like. It isn't a bad thing to only post what is trending and what the world wants to see, as long as it makes you happy and you do not go overboard. Although, when you start to become obsessed with the persona you have created online, it can lead to some pretty sad roads.
ReplyDeleteNow that we are all so globally connected through apps like Instagram and Twitter, the pressure to fit in and be considered trendy, is enormous. People do tend to hide their opinions and beliefs. I don't think that people lose their opinions, but they quite saying them out loud, which is just as bad. I agree that we all have trends that we like to follow and that it isn't a bad thing, as long as it doesn't conflict with who you are.
