I was doing the room for debate assignment when I came across this one called "Helping a Suicide When the End Isn’t Near," and it caught my attention. When I started to read the different debates on it, there was one that stuck out to me. It said that if someone who wants to die they shouldn't be forced to live. Which I believe otherwise because you should always help someone who is thinking about ending their life. I mean you should not let people take their own life because they are depressed or drunk. You need to help them stay safe. Even if you don't know what to do to help; you can simply be there for them and talk to them. You do not have to do something that puts you in a dangerous situation as well or leaves them to deal with it on their own.
It is hard to believe that you would let someone kill themselves because it is what they want. It is like a child wanting candy and always allowing them to get it. You have to tell them no because it is not ample for them. You have to say to a suicidal person that they do not need to end their life because things will get better. Do not just leave someone because you do not know what to do.
What do you believe? That if someone wants to end their life, then they should because it is what they want or that they should never commit suicide and get them help. Explain why.

Suicide never fails to leave the friends and family of the victim feeling distressed and guilty. But if they had the option to stop a suicide or let it be for the victim, anyone would surely restrain them from taking their life. I have noticed over the years that most people that were saved from suicide continue their lives joyfully and thankful for those who rescued them. So who in their right mind who simply let someone kill themselves and cause havoc when they have the option to save them and consider themselves their hero with no cape.
ReplyDeleteThere are other reasons as to why people want to take their own life than just because they are depressed, believe it is right, etc. One reason people might want to take their life would be if they were seriously ill or if something had happened to them that made them not be able to continue living on their own. A great example of this can be found in the book Me Before You by Jojo Myers. Before I read this book I could not understand why people who were ill or medically challenged would want to take their own life, but after I read it, my viewpoint on the subject completely changed. People who are ill or have undergone a serious accident that has changed their life for the worse, are part of the percentage of people who take their own life every year. They do not commit suicide just because they are depressed, drunk, etc. but because it is a way to finally be free of all the misery they are going through and would continue to go through for however long they live.
ReplyDeleteI agree that you should help someone considering suicide, but I don't believe that you should force your "help" on them.
ReplyDeletePeople consider suicide for different reasons, reasons that can't be helped or explained. If someone believes they would be better of dead, it usually isn't some split second decision that they made. Suicidal idealization is a slow but steady process that creeks up on you without you knowing.
You should help someone who you know is considering taking their own life, but don't force your love and compassion down their throat. It hurts more than it helps. Also, you can't get angry at people who have considered suicide. They really can't help it, it's not something they chose. Their mind told them that suicide was the answer and there's no way to shut those feelings off when you get them. Someone shouldn't be forced to live if they are in genuine pain and agony. It's the sad truth. Bittersweet.
