There was a particular quote that kept sticking to me while I read. Postman explains that ""Seeing is believing" always had a preeminent status... but "saying is believing", "reading is believing, "counting is believing", "deducing is believing", and "feeling is believing", are cultures that have undergone through media change. Now specifically the page before, explains how nobody would believe anything that was orally said unless it was printed out in a way.
The media has changed this way of thought and that people believe what is said as rumors. This goes to show that the media has changed the way we see things everyday, in my opinion, in a way we never thought we would see before. We, as humans, believe everything we see, hear, read, etc. which has just changed everything that happened before where people would only believe in the writing but now, that has changed. For example, we believe all these rumors about celebrities and about who goes out with whoever without looking to see if it actually is true, but we just automatically believe in the rumors themselves.
How do you feel about this? Do you think the Internet has changed us that much? Why do we believe everything we see on the Internet and somewhat find out none of it is true ?

I wanted to say that n news started coming out and the social media platforms they weren't meant for fooling people or tricking them with the news. Now that our society has became worse and fake news more common than ever some people had just been relying on that for information. as our generation grows older and we closer to the jetsons futuristic setting, yes the internet has been a drastic change to us, out mindset, and out environment.

ReplyDeleteOf course the internet is going to change us in one way or another, as some have once heard, every silver lining has a cloud, there is always going to be positive and negative aspects that comes with development. Just like our ancestors, we must learn to accept and adapt to change. I feel that as a population, we all are quick to believe the internet because of the reputation of reliability set forth. This generation grew up into the advancement of internet and as we all grew older the use of internet was used more and more until it accumulated to all school assignments being online. Now you HAVE to enroll into just about everything online . I feel that the education system pushed the use of technology onto students. To resolve the damage done by the internet, as intellectuals, we must learn how to use our inquiring minds and question everything. As Albert Einstein, one of our greatest philosophers once stated, “If I had only one hour to save the world, I would spend fifty-five minutes defining the problem, and only five minutes finding the solution”. Investigating further on topics you cannot fully comprehend, sheds light onto the truth.
ReplyDeleteI would like the believe that we trust the rumors and the fake news because since there is so much information covered, we believe the brand that is producing the news. We are trusting the people behind the news, therefore making us believe the news.
ReplyDeleteEven though that fake news is becoming more popular than real news, it is society's fault for pushing the fake news or the rumors or the shocking yet unimportant news.
I feel as if individuals should use their intelligence and not just gobble down all this information being fed to us by large media companies. Instead of taking what one says as fact we should do our research into the topic, in contrast of repeating what TMZ said about the latest celebrity breakup verbatim to our friends/colleagues. As consumers we get into this habit of believing everything that is being told to us but what we don't realize is that media outlets job is to report on the most entertaining stories and this may lead to a stretching of the truth. Also since we don't know celebrities personally we use the media to hear stories about them and they really shape our view of this person for better or worse, however we don't actually know them so how can we form an opinion on someone we never even met.
ReplyDeleteAlthough the reason we believe most of this is because of the news's use of first hand accounts and those can persuade us to believe their accounts of the situation. The internet and social media has taken this to another level as we can now be even closer to the stars and we can literally find every little dirty rumor with the click of a button. We must come back to the realization that not everything e read is true and we need to use our better judgement to dissect some of these stories.- Ahgean Davis
