While reading "25 Shocking Facts About The Epidemic Of Police Brutality In America" I realized that the problem of police brutality is not only a large issue amongst minorities but it's also just a humongous problem in general for all citizens in the United States. Although an overwhelming percentage of people killed by the police are minorities. As citizens we should be able to depend on our officers, we should be able to trust their decisions, but instead we fear our officers and think that they will murder us in cold blood like countless other victims. Michael Brown Jr, Eric Garner, etc are just a couple of examples of innocent citizens gun downed and choked to death by the police as if they were worth nothing but the dirt on the officer shoes. I whole heartedly agree with the author of this article Darnell L Moore because I also happen to think police brutality is a problem and we should try our best to reduce this problem as much as we can because if we can't rely on our officers to protect us then who will really be there for us in those situations?
Police are meant to protect us and this doesn't apply to all police officers as most officers do an excellent job but this applies to the others, the individuals that act in haste and don't think about the consequences of their actions. The number of citizens killed by policemen/women is extremely high as according to www.newsweek.com the "police killed over 1,100 people" in the year of 2017. Also according to the very same article African Americans are three times more likely to get killed by the police. This statistics clearly displays that some officers don't use deadly force as their very last effort but instead it seems as if they don't exhaust all other options before they make this crucial decision. Officers are taught to use deadly force as their absolutely last option due to the fact that a person's life is at sake and the only way to justify the killing of another human is in self defense which many of those shootings were not.
For the officers that protect and serve the citizens day in and day out they deserve to be appreciated and praised as they risk their lives on a day to day basis to ensure our safety however, the officers that make these careless decisions of killing innocents need to be chastised and punished. Many of these police receive a slap on the wrist for these unwarranted killings and no real justice is really brought upon them. Do you feel as if these officers receive adequate punishments? Do you feel that these killings occur all too often and police officers should be more careful?-Ahgean Davis

ReplyDeleteAs you mentioned, police brutality has recently been the headline of many articles and media and center of attention within our U.S. citizens. It is really sad that we not only lost reliability on our force to “Serve and Protect” us but also witness the slight return of racism centered between most of the attacks. Of course racism has always been around around our country, but the numbers that our officers display against African-Americans is putting us all on the verge of a Deja-Vu. Answering your question on police punishment, I believe that they are certainly not receiving enough punishment. If anything, they are targeted with a community riot or simply lose their jobs as officers. Some of these officers can legally be named as murderers and deserve a punishment much more than being dismissed from the force.
