Should Foreign Language Classes be Mandatory in College?

When looking through Room For Debate, I came across an article "Should Foreign Language Classes be Mandatory in College". Three high school students were discussing whether they thought it was a good idea that foreign language is mandatory. Each high school student talks about their experience with foreign language.  I would agree with Cassandra, she discusses how growing up in the environment helped her learn the language, she picked up on it "naturally". She also states that in a classroom, they give us the basics of communications rather than being outside an exploring, learning from them. I believe that being bilingual is really important, you could be traveling to a different continent and ask for directions or helping someone who only speaks their language. It really depends though on your career if it requires a foreign language. Some may just focus on what their careers requires rather than focusing on something that it doesn't need. Plus I think that learning a different language would be more interesting if we were to experience it in that place.

  1. I speak both Spanish and English, I feel that being bilingual has helped open up much more opportunities for me, such as getting a job at Taco Nazo. Growing up I was always told about the importance of learning my native language, so when I have children of my own I can pass the latino culture onto them. As they years pass, I notice more and more people only depend on the English language to communicate with others.

  2. I have always wished I was bilingual, because it is very true that knowing another language has benefits, like a pay raise in some jobs. Plus it opens you up to a new group of people to communicate with. I am currently learning Spanish and plan to take 4 years of the language, but I think my English hinders my ability to learn Spanish. The reason the older you get the harder it is to learn new language is because people get over fluent in that language (in this case English).

I went to Europe over this summer so almost a full month, while I did learn little bits of other languages when trying to speak them I would fail and switch to English.

I think it is very important to learn a language in high school or college (college has more to choose from) because it can only bring you benefits in the future.

  3. A foreign language should be required in college as it is becoming ever more necessary to speak another language. If one can speak a second language apart from their native tongue then it opens up a whole new world of opportunities, especially when it comes to getting a job because many jobs want bilingual workers as that would make interaction much easier. That breaks the language barrier and when a person masters another language not only does it open up more job opportunities but it also allows the person to connect with many others, as this can lead to life long friendships. When someone learns another's culture and dialect it broadens their horizons as they begin to realize that this world is a humongous place, which is easily forgotten.
As humans we begin to get so focused on ourselves we begin to forget about others and their cultures as many may not be interested but once one is immersed into a culture and learn as much as they can, it becomes progressively more interesting. Also once a person has the ability to speak multiple languages, they can travel places without having to tediousness of someone not understanding them. It's a major advantage and exposes people to an amazing world of possibilities.

  4. Learning another language is important since we have such a diverse community. With so many people from different culture, it will be difficult to connect with people if you only spoke one language. Also, in our daily lives, we encounter numerous people who speak different languages and it feels great when you can communicate with others in a different language. I speak another language and when I meet people who speak my language, I feel excited because I feel like I can connect with them.

My teacher last year actually told us that it is better to learn a language when you experience it. As a result, he said that it is more helpful if you go to that place since you will be forced to learn the language. Because without the language, you won't be able to explore the place in depth.

  5. I think it shouldn't be mandatory to take a foreign languages in college because if I have my set career and i know that it doesn't need me to be bilingual then why waste time and money on books and study time when its not needed. I do like the thought of knowing more than one language but I would prefer to be given the choice on whether or not I want to take the class.
