After reading Brave New World, I began to wonder if this future was possible. Valuing happiness over everything else is similar to what today looks like, only we are considerate of others. The book showed a possible future, I'm not saying it will happen. I just wonder if society could get to that point.
Most of what we see in commercials is based on bringing us joy, whether it's a new car or phone or food, but what if what we saw eventually became unsettling? You can already see a substantial difference between ads today and ads twenty years ago. If the pattern continues, it may not be respectable.
If by some chance this society does happen to exist, I do not think that it will get as bad as it is in the book, but that doesn't mean it can't get worse. It may be bad in different ways than in the book, but it could develop into something similar.

ReplyDeleteI definitely see where you are coming from when you say that the future portrayed in the book may possibly be the future we can expect as time passes; it is very likely we can get to that society pictured in the story but on a toned down level.
ReplyDeleteAs for the "what if"s of the future, I strongly think that one day we will look back at certain items or ideas and find it quite unsettling. For example, years ago cigarettes were the hottest craze; they were on commercials everywhere including being endorsed by children's shows and characters, such as The Flintstones, and that was the norm until research was done and people were able to see the consequences and horrific outcomes from smoking cigarettes, such as lung cancer and in some cases, death. Even though thinking about it is utterly frightening, there are many ways our society can reach that level. For instance, JUULs, electronic cigarettes, are the one of the biggest trends today, and though the company and many people have taken precautions to warn of the effects that may come, a large portion of the population still uses the product, especially the adolescents who see vaping as a cool and trendy. Similar to the early usage of cigarettes, there is no information or data on the long-term effects of vaping and nicotine addiction alone due to the fact that it is a fairly new product. However, this is merely one small example contributing to the many possible outcomes the future may have.
