I want to talk about the picture that Mrs. Fletcher sent in Remind of "Surprising Book Facts" because it really grasped my attention. I didn't know that there were such high percentage of people that don't read books. While I was reading it, I thought to myself "this is ridicules, people read books all the time". However I started thinking about how technology has replaced books. Now there are tons of apps that allow users to read novels or stories on their devices and Kindles. People find it more convenient to read on a electronic device then actually going outside go to a bookstore. At some point in the future the existence of books will be no more, they will be substituted by technology.
It is very upsetting to learn that 57% of new books aren't being fully read because new authors aren't given a chance to be successful in their writing if no one really reads it. Instead of handing a book to a child, parents give children electronics with "child friendly" apps to help them learn but from what I have witnessed, children use the devices to go onto YouTube and watch videos like "Barbie and Spider-man Playing Lego" (I'm not sure if that's an actual video, I'm just guessing) . I was puzzled on the last fact of the picture explaining that a child that reads more will understand emotions because personally, I believe that in order to understand a person's emotions you need to communicate and be socially interactive the person. I don't think reading more books will help understand emotions of others but others may disagree.

Nayeli, there's lots of research that suggests that reading literary fiction helps develop emotional intelligence and empathic response. This isn't in the same category as "an opinion." It is a studied phenomenon, and to dismiss the notion, one must engage with the research.
ReplyDeleteI believe that reading more books help you understand emotions better. Although, movies and TV shows can help you feel different emotions so can books. Books absorb people into a story that they are really interested in, or they can be really obsessed with one of the characters of a novel. When a betrayal happens to one of your favorite novel characters, you feel it as well. Or when you read about the death of a character that you are obsessed with, you feel some sadness as well. Although, feeling the death of a character and a real life person in your life is not the same, it can still be safe to assume that what happens in books you enjoy affect your emotions.
