Useless Occupations

The Room for Debate article named "Are More and More People Working Meaningless Jobs?" talks about how some people today are working jobs that are set out which barely benefit the society or don't benefit at all.  These jobs are put in simply to keep people out of unemployment but show have little to no favorable outcomes for the corporation or business. Examples of jobs like these are being a receptionist who answers a couple phone calls daily and refills the mint jar every so often, a office worker who responds to a little amount of emails daily for a boss who could be doing that themselves, and people who go out to try to sell others things that they don't need, such as credit reports.  These jobs simply take space in the community and the people working in them could be using their time to be doing something that they like doing or to do something that is actually beneficial to the company.  These "fluff" jobs simply distract people from doing what they love such as hobbies or other interests while bringing the community down because they aren't helping it in any way.  Should people eliminate jobs like these and have many people unemployed, but in turn have many who go out and do what they love?

  1. I believe that these types of jobs are important to our society because they are important to many people. Understanding that they are jobs that typically aren't very productive, it does allow many to have a peace of mind knowing that they have a somewhat stable income.
Many people who come to this country or simply did not have the funding to get a degree have to find jobs that don't require much schooling. Sadly, doing what you love is simply not a reality for many who are in certain situations.

  2. I believe that what Anahi said is totally correct. Most people can not live out their dream job beacause it is to much for people in different situations. Although I have a dream job I know I will not be able to pursue it. I will get a job like the ones you were talking about. They let people get money and be able to live a normal life. Some jobs are harder to get then others are. It all depends on how you prepare for the job.

  3. This is from Caleb Bachle:

I agree with what Anahi said, that these jobs are important for people, but I believe that some of them could be eliminated. The people who fill these useless jobs often could find another elsewhere. However, most of these useless jobs are for making the life of the employer easier, like answering phone calls like how Maher stated. If they want to pay for making their life easier, they should be allowed to do so.
