Going on Twitter is so much fun-- until people get racist and colorist. It seems like people, when defending the things they love or they want to anger people, just go for the racist route. This particularly happens with foreign concepts and music. I've seen so many cases of this-- where people diss off Asian music such as K-pop, C-pop, and J-pop with racist comments, along with downgrading African music as well because everyone seems to forget that Africa isn't just a giant dirt poor continent full of unfortunate people.
Why do people continuously downgrade other unfamiliar musics? No one complains when Spanish songs play on our American radios, or when people talk loudly how much they love Shakira or the George Lopez series. When I'm caught listening to non-English music, my family immediately go and tell racist jokes, or my friends would give me a weird look (listen, African and Russian music are catchy because how ominous [Russian] and beautiful [both] the languages sounds like). Why do people suddenly bat an eye when other people discuss about other nations and their unique cultures, or when the radio starts playing music that's neither in Spanish or English? It's clear that we continue to be an ignorant nation. Wasn't America suppose to be a diverse nation? If we were so diverse, why do we continue to downgrade and make racist statements towards other nationalities and their cultures?

Foreign music is most likely not liked by Americans because it's outside of their comfort zone. Personally I'm okay with foreign music because I know it's going to be different than listening to something I normally listen to. This all goes back to the phrase "don't judge a book by its cover" or in this case "don't judge a song by its language".-Dominic Diaz
ReplyDeleteI feel like people are just afraid to go after things they don't understand. I listen to K-Pop and yeah some of my friends made fun of me for a little while and when one K-Pop group finally became famous worldwide, they act like nothing happened. I even believe it is because of how unpopular foreign music are in America, people in America go after fame and who has the most music views. ~Atarah Beckford
