I came across a debate about appropriate clothing for work that sparked my interest. I personally believe that being free to dress to to one's self helps to motivate work ethic and all around keeps employees happy and helps them not dread coming to work. Being able to express what you're feeling through a creative outlet such as clothing is important, even in the workplace, to establish individuality and to feel comfortable.
Troy Alexander argues in his article titled, "Technology has Destroyed our Sense of Style" that social media has provided role models that wear clothes that are inappropriate for work, such as ripped jeans. I disagree because it is not difficult to differentiate obvious casual attire to what is considered appropriate for one's specific work environment. In addition, social media is not providing anything clothing-wise that cannot be found in other situations, such as magazines or on the street. That being said, I do think that some dress regulation is necessary. For example, a swimsuit should not be one's attire for a law firm. However, many people, especially ones in a serious business career like law, have the common sense for that and do not need to be reminded what is professional in their area of work. Should dress code be enforced at schools and workplaces? Or is individuality more important?

I think that workplaces and schools should not have a strictly enforced dress code. People know what is appropriate for wok and what isn't. They should have the right to dress freely. People like to express themselves through fashion, and they should have the right to do that. Not to mention, dress codes are blatantly sexist. Some of the rules they make, only affect women, and even if they don't, officials are always harder on women. Dress codes should not be enforced until it is able to be reasonable and equal.

I think individuality should be more important than a strict dress code. Although I feel dress codes should not be entirely disregarded, I feel people should be free to dress in what makes them feel great about themselves. In schools, dress codes are the most strict. One time I wore a spaghetti strap shirt to school because I thought I looked good in it and also because of the heat that day. Later on, however, a teacher called me out and made me put my sweater on which made broke my confidence and made me feel embarrassed. Not only do I feel dress codes are too strict, but I also feel they lower self-esteem for individuals who want to wear what comforts them. Of course, you should not go to schools or work in a swimsuit, but I feel people should have the common sense to dress for themselves and reasonably within public environments.
ReplyDeleteDress codes should not be strictly enforced and people should be free to express their individuality, as long as they dress accordingly depending on where they're going. Students should be expected to have reasonable body coverage and be banned from wearing anything offensive to anyone. People should be able to express themselves liberally and not have to sacrifice their creativity or fashion sense. I do not see how enforcing a stricter dress code serves as an alternative for an increase in academic potential.
