Incentive Pay

While looking through the New York Times' "Room For Debate" section I found an article titled "To Tip or Not to Tip." I became interested in this topic because I recently discovered that my favorite restaurant includes the gratuity in their bills. When I was younger I loved going to restaurants with friends, and I recently realized that, we never tipped the workers. Many restaurants are beginning to make tipping mandatory, and my question is, is automatic gratuity fair?

People say that automatic gratuity is different from tipping, but I disagree because you are literally paying the gratuity, or by definition, something given voluntarily usually for service. I do not think that it is fair for businesses to make tipping mandatory because tipping should be used to encourage, motivate, and show gratitude towards a worker. I do not think tipping should be required. Do you think restaurants should have automatic gratuity? Do you think they should list it as service charges instead of gratuity fees? Are gratuity fees ruining the purpose of tipping?

  1. I agree that tipping should not be a necessity. It is meant for the waiter/waitress to show that they treated the customer with care and respect. Automatic gratuity basically just defies the meaning of tipping because you are being required to pay extra even when it wasn't deserved.

  2. I don't agree with the practice of tipping at restaurants. Instead of the employer deciding the income of the employee like virtually every other business, restaurants leave their staff at the mercy of the customers. Restaurants should simply pay their staff a reasonable amount and slightly raise the price of the food to cover the expense. The custom of tipping takes away from the dining experience and seems to be a way for restaurants to pass on the burden of paying their staff to the customer.

  3. I do not agree that tipping should be mandatory. It is meant to give incentive to the waiter/ waitress. When it becomes mandatory and part of the bill, what is the point of the waiter/waitress to work and maintain good customer service. It should be a customers choice of whether or not that worker deserves extra money. Tipping, can be a good thing, but it also should be a choice.
