"For in the end, [Huxley] was trying to tell us what afflicted the people in Brave New World was not that they were laughing instead of thinking, but that they did not know what they were laughing about and why they had stopped thinking." --Neil Postman

My Time with the Summer Homework

I am not the only trying to make sure the last finishing touches of my AP homework are good enough to turn in am I? Everything is due tomorrow by three p.m. and I feel really stressed right now. I bet there are a majority of students who are relaxing because they planned out their homework with time and are just waiting to turn it all in while others, like me, are struggling to make sure everything is done in time. I will not lie, I have procrastinated so much with my homework. There have been days where I have sat down and done a good day's worth while there were other days where I would sit on my bed staring at my notebook on my desk as if all the work would magically finish itself. Balancing the fun, relaxing parts of summer with the stressful, hard working parts has always been a challenge for me. While reading The Attention Merchants by Tim Wu, I found myself lost within the text and all the points he was trying to make. Rereading something you do not understand will not make you understand it the tenth time you read it. I always find myself understanding what the text is saying when someone else explains it to me; conversations about what I read actually make me understand it better than I could have alone.

So, I hope on the first week when we all come back to school that it is okay for me to question a lot of things in the books assigned this summer because I have lots of questions. Students like me are out there, I know it. Students who struggle to finish their work and stress so much to get it done I mean. Anyone who is reading this post with a lot still to do for the homework, I would suggest to do the most you can and remember why it is a problem to leave things last minute. Use it as an important reason to gradually change the habit of leaving things last minute, and I say gradually because it is not a habit that can be broken immediately. That is what I am going to try and do. If you put your mind on what you want to accomplish and work hard for it, it can be accomplished. Do not lose all hope!! Let this class help you become a better student and learner in writing and literature. Do not let it be like a burden to dread for a whole year.

Also, I do my work despite the deadlines being so close because I want to be in this class. It is not because I need to.
