As I look through Room For Debate, I come across an article that caught my attention, "Should School Days Be Longer?" Vicki Abeles reveals that she hasn't found a research that longer school days help improve test outcomes. Vicki brings up the idea that many students are overwhelmed with homework and other activities. Being a student myself I know the stress level that comes. She claims that we need time outside of school to develop as a whole. Her very last sentence caught my attention, "The key is creating a healthier, more balanced, more engaging and effective school day, not a longer one". Teachers should be making their lessons more of this, instead of making school days longer we should use the time we have and make use of it.
I think that we shouldn't have longer school days. Many students have sports and other activities to deal with after school. I feel though as if we had longer school days there would be more homework to come with it. I would come home after a game or practice around 5-7pm, then I would need to shower, eat, and do homework. Homework takes time, I would be up late doing homework an once I'm done, I would barely get enough sleep. Having longer school days would be a bad idea, some of us may look at the clock just to see when we get to leave because the day is too long. We all need some type of break to spend more time with family, friends, sports, or doing other activities.

I think the idea of a longer school day is appealing. I disagree that more homework would come with longer school days. If the school day was longer, teachers could fit all of the days content within the day and not have it spill over as homework. I would welcome a longer school day because I believe do away with the stresses of homework and in the end, free up more time to be be with friends and family.
ReplyDeleteI see your point. By creating a longer school day, periods would be, in turn, longer, giving us more time in class to do work. Because all schools must attain an equal number of hours of class, creating a longer school day would mean less school days. Furthermore, most people have practices during the last period of the day, so maybe the hours of practice would remain the same since periods would be extended. I wouldn't mind a longer school day, if it meant fewer in total.
DeleteSometimes being longer at school can mess up your time at home with homework, sleeping, and family time. I agree it gets very stressful when your are in a sport and a club at school that require you to stay longer at school. It only gives you less time to do all things you need to do at home. I would love to spend more time with friends and learn new things at school, but not if it is going to make it worse at home doing the same amount of work every night with less time.
ReplyDeleteA longer school day does not necessarily mean more time of learning. Quality time is better than the quantity of time spent. The more time a student stays in school, the less recreational time they will have outside of school. I believe students should be capable of making their own decisions and how they spend their learning experience. School itself takes 8 hours a day and students need as much sleep as possible, so there is only a couple of hours remaining for family and recreation. I think 8 hours is already more than enough.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion I don’t mind if school days become longer just as long as there is no added homework to the extended hours the school will be giving. I do believe that the schools administration is taking it into consideration that some of their students are participating in afterschool activities. Which may last for multiple of hours at a time, and that may be the reason for why schools keep their selected times.
