This summer I have traveled on a plane twice, and on both of those trips, the flight crew grabbed the attention of practically everyone on board by holding up a phone and asking if anyone had lost it. Immediately, people’s heads perked up to see if the phone that the flight attendant was holding was theirs, even if their own phone was in their hand. The flight attendant then proceeded to inform us that the phone they were holding was in fact theirs and that was their way of getting people to pay attention to the safety instructions that were going to be announced shortly. These events made me realize how invested people are in their phones and technology in general. Sure the books that we have read this summer for homework were great and eye-opening to the way the world currently revolves around technology, but for me, they did not make me realize the actual extent until I witnessed it firsthand. I probably have witnessed the extent of it before, but now I have actually realized and processed it thanks to the summer homework books.
What are some examples you have seen in the way people are invested in technology? Do you notice when you yourself are being drawn into the vast world of technology? If so, do you do anything to stop it? Do you think the world will get over being so engulfed in technology?

I have noticed more and more people texting and driving which is concerning because they are not paying attention to the road. I then start to see people always looking at a screen. Sometimes I babysit a 4 and 7 year old and they always want their iPad to play games and do not pay attention to me when I try talking to them. I catch myself on my phone in bed all day and sometimes I do not care, while other times I force myself out of bed and take my dog for a walk. I feel like the more we start to invent new technology we are never getting back out of it. I think we will always be engulfed by technology.
ReplyDeleteAn example I have noticed that shows more and more people are becoming technology invested is when they take numerous photos on their phone. If you've ever been on vacation, you have probably seen many people take more time to take photos than to relax and enjoy whatever they are experiencing or sight-seeing. I, too, take countless pictures wherever I go, but I never forget to enjoy the moment. This past summer, I went to New York with my family and my parents and relatives constantly called me to take pictures and honestly, it was so annoying.
ReplyDeleteI notice myself being invested in technology when I'm trying to do homework or studying for a test. I am easily distracted by my phone or laptop, so the process of me finishing my homework takes longer than expected. When I know it's important to finish the assignment by a certain time, I turn my phone off and put it across the room so it would be easier for me to concentrate on my schoolwork.
I honestly believe the world's engulfment in technology will only increase from here. Unless some cool non-technological invention is created, then there may be chance. Technology is basically ingrained into our lives and there's little to no possibility we can take it away.
