The Strive for Equality

On January 21, 2017 a worldwide protest was held in Washington DC. Women from all around the country and even over seas came to partake and witness the movement. Women were protesting to, “advocate legislation and policies regarding human rights, immigration reform, healthcare reform, reproductive rights, the natural environment, LGBTQ rights, racial equality, freedom or religion, and workers rights.” The woman’s march was aimed at Donald Trump, which was occurring around the time of his inauguration as President of the US. These rallies were held and directed towards him because he made many comments regarding anti-women and other offenses. This protest is documented as one as the largest in US history.
Coming from a family of feminist, this step forward was a big one. Women came from all around, supporting each other for this fight to achieve one goal. To promote equality for all. My nana who attended the event in Los Angeles to partake in the movement explained that it was, “inspiring and hopeful”, for women all around the world. As well as my nana who attended so did my aunt. She is a professor and has a degree in women’s rights and political science. She was so intrigued by this movement and even wrote a book about it.

Do you think that this movement was needed to happen why or why not? Do you think that we still come from a society where inequality is still prevalent?

  1. I believe that this movement was bound to happen. There are many people in the world who don't support Donald Trump. With his comments regarding women made people angry, wanting them to protest. As he made those comments they brought the attention to many women in the world. I think that they were doing good in the protest. They were only simply trying to gain equality that they deserve. In my opinion, there are some inequality in our society. There are others who favors one more than another, but I would say that it isn't as much as how it was before.

  2. This movement was needed to happen. It could not have happened if there were equal rights for every human being in America. Donald Trump, who is the current president of the United States, has commented many offensive and inappropriate remarks to many individuals. The Women's March in 2017 was a worldwide protest using the voices of citizens who want to see changes in society and the government. There is inequality still in our society; individuals such as people of color or LGBT or women are put down like they are not human beings who deserve equal rights. I went to the LA Women's March last year in January. I was not sure what I would join or what I would hear, but I saw people gathered together using their voices. People who wanted rights for the greater good. I marched with these people and I listened to their powerful speeches, their voices. For so many people to gather together worldwide to speak up against inequality and the ignorance of our government shows how much change we need to make everyone's lives in America the best we can be provided and supported with. As a society, as a nation, we should come together and speak up for what we believe in and what wrongs we want to make right.

  3. Although this protest has helped improve the support and cause for equality, there is still a long way to go. People are still being discriminated against based on their gender, race, and sexual orientation. This movement brought to light many of these issues. It helped to start conversations that I hope we will find solutions to. This movement among women has definitely helped, but there is still a lot more that has to be done.
