"For in the end, [Huxley] was trying to tell us what afflicted the people in Brave New World was not that they were laughing instead of thinking, but that they did not know what they were laughing about and why they had stopped thinking." --Neil Postman

Accidental Abomination

I choose to read the article “The Internet Apologizes” by Noah Kulwin  because the photo the depressed cat truly enticed me. The article discusses the issues of the internet and what wrong turns it took to develop into the hate filled, addictive platform we know today. Although the creators of the database and famous websites that sparked the origin of the internet never saw the future of their creation grow up this way. I am going to discuss what I believe to be the worst turns the internet took and what alternatives we can use to rebuild the web.
Most websites online has one main goal, to capture your attention for as long as possible. The internet revolves around its addictive qualities and has no care for the negative effects it might has on the user. Websites like Facebook use your personal interest online in order to set you up for personalized ads in order to know what products they are most likely to spend their money on. Atonio Garcia Martinez stated in the article how “If you pulled the plug on Facebook, people would literally have riots in the streets.” We used to only lose our mind when our rights are being violated or abused, but now were more concerned with our online profile to worry about any issue too pressing.

Although the internet has developed into a crazed world, it might now be too late to bring it back. Some of the founders have ideas that could help with the addictive level and how deep in dives into your personal data. They have the idea that to save it they must use a whole new business model and hard regulation. A combination of a new goal for the web and some new laws to enforce it will help our future generations not have the problems we risk having today. - Tristian Saenz
