I opted to read the article titled "An Apology For The Internet From The People Who Built It" which gives the reader many different points of views from the the individuals that made the internet and individuals who are heads or CEO's of large companies. Throughout the article it highlights how these revolutionaries discuss their feelings and reminisce on how the internet was when it first began. Also it gives us insight to what they think about about the current status of the internet as they couldn't even fathom it becoming the ever more addicting monster it is today. They detail things such as social media networks and how they became cancerous to their users as they were exposed to struggles such as cyber-bullying via these websites.
Many of the original creators do not like what the internet has become at all. They are disgusted by what it has came to be. They don't like the fact that now it's practically like brainwashing people as they become so wrapped up into things like YouTube and what their favorite celebrity is doing. Also now through the use of social media networks companies are targeting children younger and younger so they could establish a connection and have a lifelong customer. This is atrocious and egregious because these young children are dehumanized and are just looked at not even as people but just as consumers who these companies need to have under their control.
The creators of this beautiful yet horrid place we call the internet actually had god intentions to begin with but over time with our corruption of it, it has become what we know today. At first the internet was really only for governmental officials to use or individuals in the military, but as it became more widely accessible then the motive of it began to switch from just allowing people to communicate with each other to being a place someone can come to if they seek entertainment and enjoyment. This trend continue to change the internet forever as it would never again go back to it's previous innocence of once before and instead it continued down the long dark gloomy road ahead.
During this time when the internet was undergoing all these changes the creators were slowly losing control as advertisers and members of large companies began to claim their stake in the internet. Soon after it finally became what we know it as today and it has now become addicting which none of the original creators could have ever thought of. The product we have today is definitely not what they envisioned in their brilliant minds when they saw the internet. When they saw the internet they saw it as this raw product bursting with potential but sadly like potential in most cases it didn't work out and it was corrupted by individuals whose goals were not only to just entertain us but to do it to the point where we came back habitually.
The creators of the internet are innocent in this as this was never their intention and instead the people we should blame for this is companies such as YouTube and Facebook. YouTube looks at what a specific person watches and tailors their recommend to them which is more likely to keep them coming back, but also may expose them to ideas that they may not be ready for because they're too young or they just may not be fond these ideas or principles being forced upon them through a content creator's video. Also companies such as Facebook have compromised users information which is yet another knock back on the social media platform. The internet has now gotten to the point where no one is safe and our information is so valuable that some companies are being hacked for it. It makes one miss the days of old when it was all much simpler and these problems didn't really exist. Although we have to keep our heads held high and still continue down this road because all hope is not lost and the internet and it's abusers may improve in time which would soothe some issues. Also these large companies have to more careful in protecting our information for users to feel safe again and to really enjoy this experience. Hopefully in time we make improvements and finally make the internet into what the creators wanted it to be. - Ahgean Davis
