The Internet's Evolution

The article I decided to read was "The Internet Apologies" by Noah Kulwin. This article is about how the Internet has evolved into an evil environment to all that decides to use it. Kulwin describes how the Internet has changed forms. From a simple research platform, to a world of advertisements and no privacy. However, over the years it has turned into an addiction. How have the makers of the Internet we know and love, affect our lives?

When the Internet made it's debut, there were no annoying advertisements. Nowadays, it is all we see. No matter what website you go on, there will be advertisements that you just can't get away from. These advertisements were created to catch our attention. Most of the time, we aren't given the opportunity to skip an advertisement. We are forced to watch something that we don't want to watch. But they end up working anyway. Suddenly we have many different forms of social media and games downloaded onto our devices. All of these applications cause us to be on our devices for hours on end. It truly is an unhealthy addiction. The makers of the Internet have controlled our minds to turn to the Internet for every little thing that we need.

Another scary thing about the Internet is the invasion of privacy. Take apps such Instagram and Snapchat for example. When you first make your account, you have to put in all of your personal information. Such as, your full name, email address, and phone number. Once your account is made, all of your information is out in the sea of the Internet. Anyone could be looking at your private information. They are probably doing this to you right now. All of our information out to the public can be stolen from predators. The Internet is dangerous. Not everyone on the Internet is who they say they are.

Has the Internet ever made you feel unsafe or feel addicted to it? Are the makers of the Internet doing this deliberately? How can we save ourselves from the Internet.

  2. I don't think that the internet made me feel unsafe, but it made me feel more violated or exploited. The internet is deliberately selling off our time by advertising these annoying pop-ups and attention catching advertisements, ultimately giving away something which is impossible to regain. As for the topic of becoming addicted to the internet, yes I do feel highly addicted. At the time I have procrastinated so much in doing this assignment that I am counting on the last days to finish up my blog post and I'm just now putting in my comments. The internet and being addicted to it resulted in me wasting my time doing things such as watching useless videos and playing games for hours on end. I think that the makers are not trying to waste your time intentionally, but I do think that they are doing it simply because they need a form of revenue so that they can sustain themselves. With these websites comes bills and families that reside behind the people creating it. These advertisements are used to help sustain these families economically and provide for the family that they love. Whether they are doing this deliberately or not, they need to do it in order to gain revenue. We can save ourselves by installing adblockers or setting restrictions on times where we can use these devices or the internet in general. You can install adblockers such as adblock+ or ublock origin as a sort of countermeasure towards these advertisements, but by doing so you are stripping away the money that these websites are gaining and therefore robbing them in a way. You can also set restrictions on your router to set times where you can use the internet and times where the internet is shut off. This can help reducing the time we spend on the internet and therefore reducing the time of which we see these advertisements.

  3. The internet has definitely made me addicted. There is so much to do with the internet. Everyday, new information is constantly updated. I can find something new everyday on the internet. I am mostly addicted by the games and novels that I find online. To be honest, I have spent hours of my life on the internet. Humans are curious creatures, and the internet is the perfect place to satisfy our curiosity. Some people post things on the internet for fun while to others, it's their job. There really isn't a way to save ourselves from the internet unless we get rid of it all. Our society has been built up to the point where we have become reliant on it now. However, there are ways to spend less time on it by finding other hobbies that won't involve the use of the internet.

  4. The internet is crazy. Its so large and mysterious. There are so many things that we do not know about the internet because it of its size. I think it is really crazy how much the internet has drawn us all into its trap of addiction. The internet is so smart that it can and does target and satisfy the needs of everyone. Almost everywhere everyone has used the internet because its so accessible to everyone. For many people we use the internet as a way to relieve the large amounts of stress that continues to build up. I don mind the millions of adds because I know that they need that ad as a way to get their company or brand heard and seen. I understand that the adds are neccessary. We can jsut get free information without a price. The price: millions of adds. The internet is great.

  5. The internet is like a drug for our generation basically. We are so attached to this that we can never stop looking at Instagram or snapchat. I, personally, used to be addicted to being on my phone and just look at stupid things on instagram when I could be doing something Better in my life instead. Our generation has totally lost it when it comes to the internet and it will probably never go back to the way things were before, considering that electronics and devices are becoming smarter than humans.
