"For in the end, [Huxley] was trying to tell us what afflicted the people in Brave New World was not that they were laughing instead of thinking, but that they did not know what they were laughing about and why they had stopped thinking." --Neil Postman

Study Sync Unit on Rhetoric

Practice in Rhetorical Analysis

This is the main thing we are working on between now and our break.

The best order of things:

Spotlight on Rhetoric -- reading/viewing video , with 3 questions (5 points)
First Read:  "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee" - 5 Think Questions (5 points)
Rhetorical Strategies - Write a paragraph; two peer reviews (10 points)
Diction and Syntax - Write a paragraph; two peer reviews (10 points)
Tone/Point of View - Write a paragraph; no peer review this time (5 points)

Let's call this "Foundation Work" -- important practice, worth 35 participation points -- these kinds of assignments have the power to move grades 1-3%.

Suggested Texts is a BLAST, so we'll do it in class together on Friday, 11/9 -- this is the list of readings you may choose from for your Rhetorical Analysis essay, which will be due before Thanksgiving break.
