BIASED THOUGHTS

When watching the video titled "Why you think you're right - even if you're wrong" , it opened my thoughts to the different ways of approaching an issue with the scout mindset being where the individual only wants to know the truth and the soldier mindset being where the individual wants to find evidence to boost their prior thoughts on the matter. The scout is simply fueled by the desire of craving the truth and that drives them to turn over every stone in hopes of putting the pieces together to a mystery. They search with an open unbiased mind whereas the soldier will only turn over the stones he/she deems fit to heighten their argument. This mindset is used during argumentative essays as during those essays an individual is tasked with finding evidence that only supports their claim.
Although it may be painted that a scout's mindset is more preferable to have, there are certain situations when having the soldier mindset is needed such as if a person is attempting to convince another of not doing something then the soldier mindset is needed to display the dangers or benefits of such action without their judgement swayed. I find that I attempt to use the scout's mindset as I attempt to not allow my biases cloud my judgement and thoughts from seeing the truth. When in debates with my dad over topics that we passionately disagree on, I find myself being more stubborn and containing more of a soldier's mindset as I don't want to be proven wrong and will find anything and everything that will aid me in persuading him to see my side of the discussion. - Ahgean Davis

  1. I know what you mean when you say that you attempt to use the scout's mindset, but in reality everyone has their bias and it will almost always persuade what they are saying. I think that everyone will say that they try to utilize the scout's mindset, but when it comes down to a conversation or argument, everyone is going to be bias and they generally won't have an open mind.
