"For in the end, [Huxley] was trying to tell us what afflicted the people in Brave New World was not that they were laughing instead of thinking, but that they did not know what they were laughing about and why they had stopped thinking." --Neil Postman

Education needs development or to revert?

The education system is seen as flawed and needs to have changes to cater to all groups. This way of seeing the system is flawed in my opinion. Rather than talk about what needs to be changed, we should learn what shouldn't change. The education system in my humble opinion be seen as a car in motion, if one wants change they must go in a different direction otherwise they are not changing simply moving forward in the wrong direction. To change we must first stop, so that we can go in reverse. To fix what is broken their are two ways of finding the problem, one is to look at what isn't working; However there is another way which is to see what isn't broken. The second of those two seems like a slow and unnecessary process which is ineffective, however, if the system that is being fixed has more flaws than pros then it is faster to replace everything broken by finding what is in working condition. This process is what should happen to education because the system is steadily getting worse, it is no coincidence we are finding more problems in quite some time. Why have these problems occurred is the root of the problem, to find it we need to revert to when there was less problems. A prime example is the defunding of arts and hands on experiences.

The United States is an extremely diverse place not only ethnically but in ways people learn. Different people learn differently and they should be taught in the way that best suits them. In the past their was less technology in  schools because of the lack of developed technology like laptops and iPad's. Technology suits some people's learning styles, however, the replacement of courses like metal working and hands on classes is eliminating an entire learning group.

Ken Robinson in the Ted talks has amazing ideas, however I disagree with a comment he made that changes the entire perspective. When talking about changing the education system and the revolution needed he said "the tyranny of common sense." I understand his point for saying that which is to change you must change how you think which I agree with. The biggest problem about seeing common sense as something in the way of new ideas it should be the building blocks of a better system, I think that the education system should depend on common sense for the soul reason of everyone can agree on what is common sense and when their is a debate about it untimely it will raise questions. Questions is what fuel new ideas, so to stem the new education system we should first bring back what worked and all of the different ways of learning among students then add new things that can be beneficial as well. The idea that common sense is what stands in the way of new thought confuses me because in my opinion that is what starts it.

I have a question that I want to ask to not only understand my peers but it is my hope that it will make you actually think about our education and where it is heading. Does the education system need to be reformed, reverted, or restarted? The follow up to that is why do you agree with those three or do you see another way of bettering our education system if so please respond.

  1. The education system has much needed improvements to come fruition such as a greater focus on attempting to push students toward their future careers and having classes become more personalized. During high school the classes we are assigned may be essential, but once one think out of the one classes we can choose from, not many put an individual on the path of achieving their careers. This is aside from the arts and sciences that is and while there may be CalAps not everyone is available after school, so they would have trouble attending on the select days. Within school hours there are not many options to a person who desires to work with their hands in fields such as construction or in the field of culinary arts. This is where I feel the education system lacks as it doesn't really push us into our desired careers rather it serves as a platform where we can display our educational skills.
Also the point of common sense withholding the intelligence back is highly disagreeable with me. Common sense is what fuels learning as if a person doesn't have common sense then they would have a tougher time understanding material. Sense I am interpreting this in a literal sense there may be something I'm missing, but this statement is tough to understand. Common sense is not only needed in the classroom, but it is needed to make wise decisions in life. School should not only just be about learning math, science, english, etc. There should also be an emphasis on life and teaching the students on not only being productive inside the classroom. They must be productive on the outside also which I feel most students don't value enough since there is not as much attention shown to work ethic and work habits. The school system has to become a tad more personalized to help propel people towards their goals and aspirations, plus there has to be a greater emphasis on teaching students how to be great people and not just outstanding students. - Ahgean Davis

  2. I think that the education system is okay. It can be better with a few changes in the amount of homework we get, the number of things we learned in class and how grades are interpreted. The students should be able to balance their school-related works with their personal lives and not get overwhelmed by homework and the need to do as many activities as possible.

  3. In my opinion, the education system itself needs to change in a way, not the way of how teachers expose the information to us, but on how they do it. Even though I love electronics like my phone, I really dislike the use of taking test on chrome books. I like to take notes on test and write some notes to remember and I can't really do that anymore. About two years ago, chrome books were only used to take the smarter balance we take every view years. Now we do worksheets, homework, and notes all on the laptops, which I actually dislike. I don't comprehend any information for some reason from taking notes on the computer and I feel like the use of electronics will just increase and get worst over time.
