"For in the end, [Huxley] was trying to tell us what afflicted the people in Brave New World was not that they were laughing instead of thinking, but that they did not know what they were laughing about and why they had stopped thinking." --Neil Postman

Stress in the Classroom

After watching the videos presented I begin to have different thoughts about schooling system as a whole.  I feel as if the curriculum that is being presented in our school system today is slowly getting more and more worse. I feel as if the system presented today needs a touch up, since the system is essentially the same as how it worked in the early 20th century.  Back then classrooms and the type of classwork were exactly the same as we have it today and it seems as if technology had advanced in the world, but became stagnated in our classrooms.  We can see this in many pictures that show off technology in classrooms.  The entire layout and materials in the class will be extremely familiar.  We are only slowly getting passed this issue recently, but it's not occurring fast enough to have great results being shown.

Another thought of the schooling system that I feel should change is the aspect of stress and wear it has on the students.  Every day thousands upon thousands of students go to school and we all come back tired and exhausted from only staying there for only a couple of hours.  The stress that gets put on us from every single school day wears us down and the grades that are presented to us causes us more stress even when were out of the classroom.  I am one of these students and no example of what happens to a worn down student is greater or more relatable than what happened to me today.  I had most of my draft written out in a doc because I had been working on it in the barbershop to get ready to turn in.  Once I had got home at 4:30-5:00 I laid down for what seemed like a second and passed out entirely, not waking up until 2:00 AM and realizing I haven't turned in anything.  I had 3 different tests to take today and the stress that those tests brought on me didn't even let me stay awake for 30 minutes longer and at least publish the blog I had.  I feel that teachers need to not only need to keep the classwork that needs to get done in check, but also the student's stress level and state.  The student's well being should be put over whatever you're studying right now and making sure that they're okay and not having their minds deteriorate from too much work and staying up too late.

I feel that the best way to raise performance in our schools is to take the students into more account.  We should be able to understand and accommodate for students more because these few years of their lives will be the hardest for them to pull through, and will shape the outcome of the rest of their lives entirely.  If the student is affected by the work that is required every day then they most likely will become discouraged and blame the school system that has placed so much work on them.

  1. I agree with you. Our effort determines our success. We all are smart, but it is the amount of effort we put in that controls how successful we are. We continuously take advantage of our intelligence and therefore, we don’t do as well as we should. If we would simply put in more effort, we would do so much better.
